Moving from California to Nevada may involve more than changing an address. California residency, domicile, income sourcing, property, work, records, and personal ties are related questions that must be evaluated from the actual facts—not from one checklist item.

California → Nevada Tax & Residency Guide
This guide organizes the questions California residents commonly encounter when establishing a life in Reno, Sparks, or another Nevada community. It is designed to help you identify records and issues to discuss with a qualified tax or legal professional; it does not determine anyone’s residency.
Nevada does not impose an individual state income tax, but a move does not mean a person has no tax obligations. Federal income tax, sales and property taxes, California-source income, business activity, and filing requirements may still matter.
01
California residency and domicile are fact-based
California generally looks at whether a person is in California for other than a temporary or transitory purpose, or is domiciled in California while outside the state for a temporary or transitory purpose. Domicile is commonly understood as the place a person intends to make a permanent home and return to when absent.
Physically leaving California, purchasing a Nevada home, or changing one registration can be relevant, but no single factor automatically establishes Nevada residency or ends California residency. The purpose of the move, its expected permanence, time in each state, and the location of a person’s closest connections may all matter.
02
Connections, records, and evidence of a genuine move
Keep a consistent, dated record of the move. The following categories can help organize documents and professional advice; they are not a scoring system and none is automatically controlling.
Homes and property
Purchase, sale, lease, occupancy, rental use, utilities, insurance, property management, and where personal belongings are kept.
Licenses and registrations
California and Nevada driver’s licenses, vehicle registration, voter registration, and the dates each record changed.
Work and finances
Work location, employer or business activity, banking and mailing addresses, tax documents, professional relationships, and recordkeeping.
Family and personal ties
Where immediate family lives, schools, health care, community activity, memberships, pets, and the pattern of time spent in each state.
A Nevada driver’s license, Nevada vehicle registration, voter registration, local housing records, utilities, and updated financial or mailing records can help document a move when they accurately reflect real life. Retaining a California home or other California connections is not automatically decisive, but the nature and use of those connections may be relevant.
03
Residency, California-source income, and remote work are separate questions
Becoming a California nonresident does not automatically end California tax exposure. Rent or gain from California real property, compensation for services physically performed in California, and income from certain California business activity may remain California-source income.
For employees, where services are physically performed is important, and compensation earned for work performed outside California is generally not California-source wage income for a nonresident. Deferred compensation, equity compensation, business ownership, independent contracting, and work performed during California visits can require different sourcing analysis. A California employer’s address alone does not answer every question.
Remote workers and business owners should keep calendars, travel records, work-location records, payroll documents, contracts, and business records, then have a qualified adviser review the actual arrangement.

Does Moving Out of California Automatically End California Tax Residency?
English
Moving to Nevada can be part of a genuine residency change, but physical departure alone does not settle California tax residency. Real estate, driver’s licenses, voter and vehicle registration, remote work, business activity, family connections, and the continuing use of California property may all form part of the facts.
Residency and California-source income must be considered separately. Someone who becomes a nonresident may still have California-source income, including income tied to California real property, services performed in California, or certain California business activity.

California vs. Nevada Taxes: What Actually Changes When You Move?
California vs. Nevada:
English
Nevada does not impose an individual state income tax, while California does. That is an important difference, but moving to Nevada does not mean paying no taxes. Federal income tax, sales tax, property tax, and other household costs still matter.
A person who becomes a California nonresident may still owe California tax on California-source income. The actual financial effect of a move depends on income, property, work, filing status, and individual circumstances.

Moving to Nevada: Sell, Rent, or Keep Your California Home?
English
Selling, renting, or keeping a California home can affect available equity, carrying costs, property-management responsibilities, and qualification for a Nevada mortgage. Rental income is not the same as profit after vacancy, repairs, management, insurance, taxes, and reserves.
California rental income and a later sale of California real property may remain relevant for California tax purposes after a move. The right comparison depends on the household’s finances, loan program, timeline, property, and individual tax circumstances.

California tax residency
California-source income
住在 Nevada,替 California 公司 remote work
