Does Moving Out of California Automatically End California Tax Residency?
A bilingual educational episode about why physically leaving California does not, by itself, settle California tax residency—and why residency and California-source income remain separate questions.
Episode 1: Residency depends on the complete facts
Changing an address or purchasing a Nevada home can be part of a genuine move, but no single action automatically ends California tax residency. The purpose and permanence of the move, time spent in each state, property use, official records, work arrangements, and continuing personal connections may need to be considered together.
Residency must also be separated from income sourcing. Even after becoming a California nonresident, income connected with California real property, services performed in California, or certain California business activity may remain California-source income.
